“The priesthood is the eternal power and authority of God by which He blesses, redeems, and exalts His children.”5 Or as Elder Russell M. Nelson taught, “Priesthood authority has been restored so that families can be sealed eternally.”6 We know that “The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be Access to the power and the blessings of the priesthood is available to all of God's children." . But distributing the authority of the priesthood has raced ahead of distributing the power of the priesthood, said President Boyd K. Packer, who directed his Saturday morning address to the families of the Church, particularly fathers. The Church has done well distributing the authority of the priesthood — there are quorums of elders and high priests worldwide. Priesthood authority is the right to perform the ordinances of the priesthood, but to gain power in that priesthood requires much more than just the laying on of hands.

No other Christian church understands God in this way.

Receiving the authority of the priesthood by the laying on of hands is an important beginning, but it is not enough.

Second, priesthood is also the term used to describe the power and authority that God gives to ordained priesthood holders on earth to act in all things necessary for the salvation of God’s children. Ordination confers authority, but righteousness is required to act with power as we strive to lift souls, to teach and testify, to bless and counsel, and to advance the work of salvation.

Ordination confers authority, but righteousness is required to act with power as we strive to lift souls, to teach and testify, to bless and counsel, and to advance the work of salvation. An educator by profession, Bednar was president of Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU–Idaho) from 1997 to 2004.. The actual name of the priesthood is "the Holy Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God"; but to avoid the too-frequent repetition of the name of deity, it is called by other names, particularly the Melchizedek Priesthood; i.e., it is the same authority held by that righteous king and high priest (Gen. 14:18; Heb.
